    Amazon.com Hands-On Review
For parents whose vocal cords can’t hold out for 200 rounds of "Hush Little Baby," a sound machine is a must for baby bedtime routines. And the DEX Sound Sleeper is one of the best ones we’ve ever found. This small (6 by 10 by 12 inches), simple device features a high quality speaker, on/off or 60-minute timer switch, volume control, single, combine, or random mode, battery or power adapter capability, headphone jack (headphones not included), and, most spectacularly, 10 sound options which can be combined to make 24 sound combinations altogether.

Doctors and sleep experts recommend a consistent, relaxing sleep routine for newborns and older babies. Freeing baby’s sleep environment of jarring or distracting outside noises is an important step in creating a soothing space for sleep. The Sound Sleeper provides just enough peaceful background noise to block household hubbub. Once baby becomes familiar with the sounds of this machine, she’ll probably start yawning the minute she hears it! The Sounds of (Near) Silence
The sounds of Sound Sleeper don’t have to be boring, just relaxing and repetitive. Experiment with the various sounds to find the perfect soporific.

    Summer Night
The buzz of peeper frogs and insects is a happy, sleepy, country sound.

    Rain
What’s cozier than curling up in bed with a gentle rainstorm pattering outside the window?

    Brook
Burble, burble, burble—just don’t try this one when your toddler is potty-training!

    Ocean
The deep tranquility of a calm ocean is unmatched for its lulling ability.

    Wind
The wind blows quietly in the trees, but you and baby are safe and sound at home.

    Womb
The rhythmic swishing sounds of the womb: it’s a natural for soothing baby!

    Seagull
Just a few lonely seagull cries, widely spaced.

    Bird
    Pretty, delicate bird song.

    Buoy
The distant ringing of a bell buoy. Great in combination with the Ocean sound.

    Thunder
Thunder rumbles, but the storm always stays far off in the distance. Best combined with Rain, of course.

Experiment with the Combine mode to find the perfect sleep-inducing sounds for your baby. We like Brook and Bird, Wind and Thunder, and Ocean and Buoy, but who knows? Maybe the magic combination will be Womb and Seagull!

The power adapter feature of the Sound Sleeper is very handy for everyday use, but the battery option is a lifesaver when traveling. The ability to leave the sound machine on all night long (or put it on the one-hour timer) is invaluable. Babies are notorious for waking up throughout the night; when they hear the same soothing sounds they fell asleep to, it will be much easier to return to those sweet dreams. Requires 4 AA batteries (not included). --Emilie Coulter

VERY quiet, broke within one month, 2010-03-08
I would normally not write a review but I want to offer other buyers the chance to buy a more expensive, louder & better white noise machine. I bought this after reading reviews that it was pretty quiet. I thought the cheapest would work since it's for my baby's room & I didn't think the volume would be much of an issue. But this machine is VERY quiet. You really need to be able to amp up the volume a lot more and it needs a better, fuller sound.

After using it for a month, it broke. It won't stay on for more than one minute.

I would urge you to spend the extra $20 and buy a better product. In the end, you'll be happier.

Ninjas (good ones) work for Dex support. The product is good too ;), 2010-03-02
My wife bought the Sounds Sleeper based on it's simplicity, versatility and reviews. I'm writing this review because Dex support is awesome.

Customer service in electronic gadgets and software is dead for the most part. Thing is, the staff at Dex didn't get the memo. I had a question about how the machine is powered when batteries are left inside and it's connected to AC (below). It wasn't in the docs, but I had an email response with a clear, concise answer in ~3 hours. Nice job, Dex support people.

It runs off of AC and batteries, so it's very versatile. We have a toddler and newborn in a 2br house. To avoid toddler noise we have the newborn nap in the bedroom during the day and the 'play room' at night. The AC stays in the night time abode to save batteries and we run batteries for daytime naps.

The operation is simple enough for sleep deprived parents to use. The multiple buttons clutters the look of the machine, but who cares, we have building blocks and toy cars strewn about our dining room. Plus, all you have to do is plug it in to AC power and it pulls AC current. No battery removal and no battery drain. Sweet.

poor sounds, not loud enough, 2010-02-10
The volume doesn't get loud enough to drown out any outside noise. Also, the sounds fluctuate way to much, going from soft to kind of loud back to soft again. This won't keep my daughter asleep if an outside noise (phone, dog barking, etc.) happens during the soft cycle. The rain sound is pretty constant, but still not loud enough. I ended up returning the machine and downloading an mp3 of white noise that sounds more like a constant static. I made lots of copies and put them on my iPod and run that in her room now. It works great and I can really crank the volume up if I need to.

Can barely hear the noise on this machine, 2010-02-03
The maximum noise level on this machine is very low. It is not going to block out traffic noises in a city or even furnace noises. I have other Marpac and Connair noise machines in the house that perform much better at covering up other nighttime noises.

     Love it!, 2010-01-30
Not only does my infant crash out when he hears the "rain" with the added "thunder" but so do my husband & I. A sound machine is key to helping with forming a good sleeping routine. He's still very small & sleeps in a bassinet in our room. I'm going to miss the sound machine for my own sleep once he's moved into his crib in his room. I might have to buy another one just for me.
